Gunshots fired: Siege under way at home in city's south-east

A siege is under way at a house in Melbourne's south-east after reports a gun was fired from the home,  reportedly narrowly missing a tradesman working nearby.

Police are negotiating with a man in a house in Clayton South.

A Victoria Police spokeswoman said they received calls at 3.30pm on Thursday afternoon that a gunshot had been fired in the vicinity of Westall Road.

They have since blocked off a section of the road, between Heatherton and Heyden roads.

The Critical Incident Response Team are also at the location and are negotiating with the man inside.

A tradesman has told Channel Seven News the shooting happened at a worksite.

He said the gunman, believed to be a neighbour, fired a rifle twice after an argument, and one of the bullets narrowly missed his workmate.

Local resident Kathleen, who lives in Orloff Close behind the home where the siege is happening, said the house where the shots were reportedly fired is next door to a construction site.

"We can only hear police sirens and there are police parked blocking the street, but we didn't hear anything else," she said.

A resident of Westall Road said he saw at least four police cars parked around the home, and more vehicles stopping traffic from travelling north.

"There's a bit of action happening," the resident, who wanted to remain anonymous, told The Age.

"My wife went down and spoke to police. They said not to be around the area at the moment."

Traffic continues to flow southbound, but motorists are being asked to avoid the area altogether while the incident is ongoing.
