HANCOCK — A Delaware County man opened the hood of his car to jump start the vehicle earlier this month and heard a distinctive rattle.

A large rattlesnake was resting in the center of the engine block. As the man backed away, the disturbed reptile slithered over to the battery and curled up there.

Unsure what to do next, the man called state environmental conservation police.

Lt. Nate Ver Hague and Officer Mark Vencak arrived and confirmed the snake was a timber rattlesnake seeking shelter.

Vencak carefully extracted the snake from the engine compartment as Ver Hauge untangled the anima's tale from the engine.

"The officers released the snake nearby, next to several large boulders — a much more snake-appropriate habitat," police said.

The incident occurred June 11 in Hancock and was noted in a Wednesday roundup of recent ECO police calls circulated by the state Department of Environmental Conservation.
