Nagpur: Within two months, the city witnessed sixth liver transplant, on Wednesday at New Era Hospital, Lakadganj. The first liver transplant took place on April 22, where the donor was from Amravati.
Suresh Dukre, 35, from Yavatmal district, met with a road accident and was declared brain-dead by New Era Hospital. Dukre, a farmer from Mohurli village in Wani tehsil, had suffered a head injury and was admitted to the hospital on June 18.

The family of the B+ve blood group patient gave nod for organ donation after being counselled by the hospital doctors. The organ retrieval procedure was immediately started and heart, liver, kidney and corneas were retrieved.

The liver was donated to Nilesh Patel, 34, and the transplant took place at New Era Hospital itself. The heart was harvested and sent to Fortis Hospital, Chennai, through a chartered flight after creating a green corridor in the city. Each of the kidneys was sent to Wockhardt Hospital and Orange City Hospital, both in Nagpur. Corneas were sent to Mahatma Eye Centre, Nagpur.

“This was a challenging operation for us as the patient was an alcoholic and suffered from acute liver failure. It is good to see people becoming more aware about organ donation and the concept is seeing an upward trend,” said Dr Rahul Saxena.

In Nagpur Zone, Dukre was the 35th brainstem donor. Heart, liver, and kidney retrieval teams worked in unison at the OT of New Era Hospital, and the organs were allotted by Zonal Transplant Coordination Committee.

A heart retrieval team had come from Pune. Dr Anand Sancheti, who is not in the country, coordinated with the heart team at Chennai. Also, cardiologist Dr Nidheesh Mishra helped in ECHO and cardiac support.

Dr Manoj Durairaj, Dr Shantanu Shastri, Prashant Dhumal, Mukesh Adheli, Dr Vivek Lanje and Dr Vijaya Lanje from New Era assisted the team.
