The quake hit near Te Kaha about 10.23pm on Wednesday.

A strong quake has hit north west of Rotorua. 

It had a preliminary magnitude of 4.7 and was 4km deep, GeoNet reported. The shallower depth was revised from an earlier report of 18km.

Within minutes of the quake hundreds of people had reported feeling it. By 10.40pm, one person reported the shaking as severe, while 14 said it was strong and 99 described it as moderate.
