BENGALURU:
Aishwarya BN, the JD(S) candidate emerged victorious in the Binnypet bypoll, which was held on Monday.
The bypoll was held as a result of the death of sitting corporator
Mahadevamma Nagaraj in January.
Aishwarya, who is the daughter Mahadevamma, won the election with a total of 7,188 votes, well ahead of other contenders, Chamundeshwari G of the BJP (2,455 votes) and
Srividya Shashikumar of the Congress (5,249 votes). The none of the above (NOTA) option got 159 votes.
Voting was held in 37 polling stations on Monday, and 34,582 people were expected to exercise their franchise. However at 43.54%, the
voter turnout was much lower than both the Bengaluru and state average turnout, displayed during last months assembly election.
Binnypet (ward no 121), is one of the 198 wards within the
Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) limits, and is a part of the
Gandhinagar assembly constituency.
Currently, the Congress and the JD(S) are coalition partners in the BBMP council.
