COIMBATORE: An 85-year-old
woman alleged that someone had withdrawn around Rs 4.86 lakh from her
bank account without her knowledge using an
ATM card which she had never owned. The victim filed a complaint to the city police commission on Friday.
“We do not have an
ATM card for the account, but the amount was withdrawn using an ATM card,” said the woman’s son S Abdul Hakim. He alleged involvement of bank officials in the fraudulent act.
The woman, S Usain Bibi, a resident of Kunniyamuthur, has been receiving pension since the demise of her husband, who was a sanitary supervisor with the civic body, in 1978. She maintains a
savings account with a nationalised bank.
Citing that his mother would withdraw a few thousands from the bank after submitting a withdrawal slip at the counter every three to four months, he said that when she had approached the bank a few days ago, bank officials told her that the account did not have any balance.
Preliminary inquiries with the bank officials revealed that the bank had issued an ATM card for this account a couple of weeks ago and the entire amount had been withdrawn within a few days, he said.
Over the period of ten days between May 25 and June 4, Rs 50,000 was withdrawn from her account daily using an ATM card, he said citing the bank transaction details.
Someone had apparently approached bank officials for an ATM for her savings accounts. The person had submitted the photocopy of her Aadhaar card.
The complainant questioned how could the bank officials approve the request of an unknown person without intimating the account holder.
Usually, the bank cards would be sent through courier to the residential address, but in this case, the officials had handed it over to the accused, he said.
The complaint was forwarded to the cyber cell of the city police.
