Man dies after being hit by South Melbourne tram

A man is dead after being struck by a tram in Melbourne.

Police believe the 69-year-old man fell onto tracks on Kings Way at South Melbourne as the tram was approaching before he was hit about 6pm on Tuesday.

The South Melbourne man died at the scene.

Police are investigating and will prepare a report for the coroner.

His death brings the annual road toll to 99, compared to 112 for the same time last year.
