In addition to new students enrolled at Lake Erie College, there will be some other new faces on campus.

The School of Education is bringing on a new faculty member to lead some of their graduate offerings.

Beth Walsh-Moorman will oversee the college’s Master of Education in Literacy and Reading Endorsement programs, according to a news release.

She will also be the new assistant professor of literacy within the School of Education and Professional Studies.

“I hope to build programs that prepare teachers to be literacy leaders whose students are ready for the complex literacy demands of the 21st century,” Walsh-Moorman said. “Pedagogy and theory will be relevant and current, with a strong focus on practical classroom-based practices.”

In addition to her work overseeing the M.Ed. and Reading Endorsement programs, Walsh-Moorman intends to continue building community partnerships through the college. She also aims to build a summer literacy program that will give children from Lake County access to the campus.

Originally from Lake County, Walsh-Moorman holds a master’s degree from the University of Michigan and a doctorate in curriculum and instruction with a literacy specialization from Kent State University.

For the past two years, she has served as the English Department chair and a literacy specialist for Notre Dame Cathedral Latin School, working closely with content area teachers to improve literacy instruction across subjects. She also worked as an adjunct professor at John Carroll and Kent State universities, focusing her research on new literacies, disciplinary literacy, visual literacy, Socratic methods, reading fluency and mastery grading for writing coursework, the release also said.

“We look forward to the vision Dr. Walsh-Moorman will bring to the Master’s and Reading Endorsement programs,” said Katharine Delavan, dean of the School of Education and Professional Studies. “She is passionate about community outreach and accessibility to literacy experiences.”

Meanwhile, three LEC alumni will join the Board of Directors.

Jean Makesh, John Paganini and Richard Stark have returned to the college to help drive itss recently articulated mission and 2018-21 strategic plan as board members.

These three new trustees will draw from their immense expertise in health care technology, management and business development in for-profit and non-profit settings, the release stated.

“With their guidance, the college can continue to provide an excellent, inclusive, and highly personalized education grounded in the liberal arts tradition for students today and in the future,” the release states.
