Andy Murray is ‘not sure’ if he will play at Wimbledon

Two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray admits he is not sure if he will play at next month’s Championships.

The British star made his tennis return at the Queen’s Club in London yesterday where he lost an “epic three-setter” against Nick Kyrgios of Australia, The Daily Telegraph reports. 

It was Murray’s first competitive match for 11 months owing to a hip problem that required surgery in January. 

After his 2-6, 7-6, 7-5 defeat to Kyrgios, Murray was asked about his chances of appearing at Wimbledon, which starts on 2 July. He said: “I won’t rule anything out just now. I won’t rule out playing Eastbourne [22 to 30 June] and not playing Wimbledon. I wouldn’t rule out not playing a tournament next week and trying to get matches in an exhibition tournament, as well, to get ready for Wimbledon.

“I’m not sure yet. I’m really happy that I got on the match court and played [against Kyrgios]. It was a close decision. I have not been practising loads at all. I have been hitting for a couple of weeks, and at the beginning it was only for 30 minutes or so. I really haven’t played a whole lot of tennis, so I’m happy I got out there and competed and performed respectably.”

In his column for BBC Sport, Murray said his return against Kyrgios was “emotional” after 11 months on the sidelines.

The 31-year-old wrote: “A lot of the other players, coaches and fans were giving me messages and wishing me luck, saying it was great to see me back on the court. That’s what made it emotional. But then the closer I got to the match I became more nervous and started to concentrate on my gameplay and strategy.

“Then once I got out there on court I didn’t feel too emotional. Obviously I was also really happy to be back because of everything that has gone on in the past 10 or 11 months. It was a nice day - just a shame about the result.”
