Thiruvananthapuram: A fire was reported at the Karunya dialysis unit of the
Medical College Hospital here on Wednesday night. Timely intervention by the hospital authorities ensured that the patients were shifted safely to nearby blocks. The fire was put out quickly.
The incident, in which a wire connecting the air conditioner and its stabilizer caught fire, happened around 9.30pm. By the time two fire-fighting units from Rajaji Nagar reached the hospital, the dialysis unit staff had successfully managed to douse the flames and shifted the four patients inside to other ICUs and wards.
But, an incandescent light in the surgical ICU next to the dialysis unit also went up in flames by then, which the fire fighters brought under control.
Fire station officer Suresh Kumar said that overheating of old wires could be the reason for fire. The actual reason could be known only after detailed examination.
According
MCH superintendent Dr M S Sharmad the block where the fire broke out consisted of one dialysis unit and four ICUs. There were 16 patients altogether.
