Iowa Secretary of State Paul Pate will join other secretaries of state from across the country to coordinate a national election security summit in September.
Pate announced in a Wednesday news release that he would be joining a bipartisan group of state officials — aided by the National Association of Secretaries of State — to create the National Election Security Summit, which will be Sept. 10-11 at the headquarters of World Wide Technology in St. Louis.
“We are excited to promote the election security summit to all 99 Iowa county auditors and staff,” Pate said in the release. “The partnerships we build in September will reap dividends this election cycle and into the future. State election officials are actively working to help secure elections and working together to identify threats, vulnerabilities and solutions.”
Pate said national, state and local election officials will work to ensure a secure election system with officials from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Election Assistance Commission, and the Elections Infrastructure Information Sharing and Analysis Center, as well as security professionals, election experts and other industry leaders.
Topics of discussion will include protecting election systems, crisis management, best practices and election equipment security and communication.
“These actionable security discussions will provide attendees usable steps to mitigate threats and vulnerabilities as election authorities gear up for the 2018 midterm elections,” the release said.
