Police chase through Perth streets ends in head-on freeway crash
A car has crashed head on with another car on the Cedric Street off-ramp as they fled police on the freeway, witnesses report.
Listeners phoned in to report the chase to 6PR about midday on Tuesday, claiming a white Toyota Kluger lost control on the Mitchell Freeway and crashed into the front passenger side of a BMW.
Truck driver Brayden told 6PR’s Gareth Parker he narrowly avoided crashing into the Kluger about 11.40am on Great Northern Highway in West Swan, near West Swan Road.
Brayden claimed the Kluger was swerving either side of the road and missed him by about a metre.
There were also reports of the Kluger travelling on Gnangarra Road, Beechborough Road and Alexander Drive heading south towards Malaga. It was also seen on the freeway south near Hutton Street before callers reported the crash.
“It seems to have cleaned up a car and a couple of people are running away from the scene,” one caller told 6PR’s Simon Beaumont.
“Police are not too far away. Let’s assume I was doing 100 [km/h], he was doing at least 120km/h.”
Another man phoned in, claiming to have spotted a white Toyota Kluger travelling the wrong way up the freeway before it collided with a BMW.
“I heard sirens, looked to my right and a car was going ... opposed to traffic ... and hit a what looked like a [BMW] X5 head-on and then steered off into the bush on Cedric Street,” he said.
“It was a head-on, so hopefully the X5 guy is OK.”
6PR reporter Jake Battrick is at the scene and said on Twitter three people — two women and a man — had been arrested after the crash.
One person had been taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash comes after a Perth man allegedly had a gun pointed at him during a violent car-jacking in Mirrabooka on Monday evening, sparking a search for both the car stolen from him and the other car involved — a white Toyota Kluger.
Police have not yet confirmed the two incidents are linked.
The 28-year-old man was driving west along Beach Road in a black Volkswagen Jetta about 6.50pm on Monday when he stopped at a set of traffic lights.
While stopped at the lights, a white Toyota Kluger pulled up next to him and a man got out of the car, walked over to the Jetta, opened the driver's door and demanded the driver hand over his belongings.
The man then punched the driver a number of times in the head and body, and dragged him out of the car.
Once on the ground, the driver told police he saw another passenger of the Kluger pointing a gun at him, before his attacker drove off in the Jetta and travelled west on Beach Road, with the Kluger following closely behind.
Both cars are still missing, and police asked the public to keep an eye out for a black 2011 Volkswagen Jetta with the registration 1GFA299, and a white 2017 Toyota Kluger with the registration 1GJC559.
Anyone who sees either vehicle has been asked to contact police on 131 444, and anyone with further information has been asked to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or make a report online.
