NORTH GREENBUSH — A 30-year-old woman is accused of running over a stranger who got out of his car to check on her safety, town police said.
On Friday, North Greenbush police were called to the intersection of State Route 4 and Bloomingrove Drive to investigate reports of a crash. Officers arrived to find a pedestrian had been struck by a car and the driver had fled.
The male victim was taken to Albany Medical Center Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police said the victim was driving on Interstate 90 when he saw a car hit a guardrail on Exit 8 without stopping. The driver of that car was 30-year-old Nastassja M. Clark of Poestenkill, police said.
The victim pulled off the highway behind Clark and, when both vehicles stopped at a traffic light, the man got out of his car to approach her window in an attempt to see whether she was OK, police said.
Clark did not respond, so the victim walked in front of her car — "where he made eye contact with Clark before she suddenly stepped on the gas pedal and struck the victim," North Greenbush Police Chief David M. Keevern said in a Tuesday statement. Clark then sped off, police said.
Officers searched for the woman and her car for two hours before arresting her without incident a short distance from the crash site, police said.
Clark is charged with felony assault and misdemeanor leaving the scene of a personal injury accident.
She was arraigned in North Greenbush Town Court and taken to Rensselaer County jail on $1,000 cash bail. She is set to return to that court in late July.
The victim remained hospitalized Tuesday in stable condition.
