IOWA CITY — Mercy Iowa City will begin a partnership with a statewide cardiology center starting next month.
As of July 9, Mercy Cardiology will integrate with the Iowa Heart Center, owned by Mercy Medical Center-Des Moines and a part of the Mercy Health Network, to become the center’s 11th primary location in Iowa.
“We are very pleased to bring the many advantages of our new relationship with Iowa Heart Center to Mercy Iowa City and patients across southeast Iowa,” said Sean Williams, president and chief executive officer of Mercy Iowa City, in an email to The Gazette.
The new center, called Iowa Heart Center-Iowa City, will be located in the Mercy Cardiology offices, 540 E. Jefferson St., suite 400.
Mercy Iowa City cardiology providers will continue seeing their current patients, according to a news release on the announcement. All current outreach clinics in Fairfield, Fort Madison, Mount Pleasant and Muscatine also will continue, the news release stated.
Procedures and hospitalizations will continue at the Mercy Iowa City hospital.
Margaret Reese, Mercy Iowa City spokeswoman, said the integration with the Iowa Heart Center is “an expansion” of what Mercy’s cardiology already offers. This partnership provides Mercy Iowa City with access to the Iowa Heart Center’s 90 providers, which in turn will expand services offered.
“The new Iowa Heart Center-Iowa City will expand current services to provide access to advanced therapies in vascular and advanced heart failure, as well as Iowa Heart Center research and physicians who perform advanced cardiac therapies in heart failure and structural heart disease,” Williams’s statement said.
The Iowa Heart Center has primary locations in Ames, Ankeny, Carroll, Des Moines, Fort Dodge, Indianola, Marshalltown, Newtown, Ottumwa and West Des Moines.
Mercy Iowa City, the 234-bed hospital, joined the Mercy Health Network — a unified Catholic health network with 42 hospitals and 2017 clinics statewide — this past year after it exited an agreement to join the UnityPoint Health network.
