Family members allege he was beaten to death

A man died after he accidentally fell into Agra canal in a bid to evade thrashing by three security guards of a water park in south Delhi’s Kalindi Kunj near Okhla, on Sunday night, the police said on Monday.

The deceased’s body was taken out of the canal on Monday morning by rescue teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRP).

Sameer was drunk when he accidentally fell into the canal, the police said.

However, his family members have alleged that the security guards brutally assaulted him with sticks and when he died, they threw his body into the canal.

They alleged that the guards dumped Sameer’s body into the canal to cover their crime and also mislead the police.

Guards did not tell cops

“The security guards did not inform the police about the incident. We were informed by Sameer’s family members and his two other friends who were with him during the scuffle,” said a police officer.

“A case under Section 304 [culpable homicide not amounting to murder] of the Indian Penal Code has been registered at Jamia Nagar police station. The security guards have been detained for questioning. Their role is under observation,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Chinmoy Biswal (South-East).

Around 9.30 p.m. Sameer and his two friends — Saad and Rameez — after drinking liquor forcefully tried to enter the water park despite being told by the three guards that it was closed for the day, the police said.

A brawl started between them during which the guards allegedly dragged the three “drunk” men inside the premises. They allegedly assaulted the three friends with sticks.

Saad and Rameez managed to flee outside while Sameer ran further inside the water park to escape the beating.

While crossing the iron railings, he accidentally fell into the canal, said a police officer. “In one of the CCTV cameras, the guards are seen chasing Sameer,” the officer added.

Sameer, who worked as an autorickshaw driver, is survived by his parents and a brother.

His family lives in Vishawakarma Colony in Jaitpur.
