Saskatoon police say a chase Monday night involving a stolen car ended with a man trying to drown a police dog in a slough near Radisson.

Police attempted to stop a stolen Mercedes car on Circle Drive around 11 p.m. CST but the car sped away and was spotted heading west on Highway 16, according to a police news release.

The suspect abandoned the car east of Radisson after officers successfully used stop sticks, the release said.

The suspect, a 34-year-old from Saskatoon, then allegedly attempted to steal another vehicle before running into a field and finding himself in a slough.

The police dog entered the slough to apprehend the man. The man threatened the dog and attempted to drown it multiple times, police said.

Officers entered the slough and had a "physical altercation" with the suspect, police said. The man was taken into custody.

The dog was taken to a vet and later released.

The suspect, who had been bitten by the police dog, was taken to hospital with minor injuries. He is charged with possession of stolen property over $5,000, dangerous driving, robbery and causing unnecessary suffering to a police dog.
