HC orders removal of encroachment from Thandi Sadak in Haldwani

The Uttarakhand high court has ordered for the removal of encroachments from Thandi Sadak, a 2km road from Beersheba School to Tikoniya road, which runs parallel to Nainital Road in Haldwani.

“Thandi Sadak is an important road, but it is facing encroachments from unauthorised shops and dhabas, and also parking of vehicles. It has now become difficult to navigate vehicles on this road due to the problems,” said Gurpreet Singh, a resident of the Thandi Sadak area and secretary of the Guru Gobind Singh Charitable Society, who had filed a petition in the high court, highlighting the problem.

Singh said that he was hopeful that the court order would help in removing congestion on the road, better traffic management and curb disposal of waste into the canal. A canal runs on the edge of the road that separates it from parks in the area. The road also has many trees on it, which narrow down its width and add to the congestion problem.

Nainital senior superintendent of police Janmejay Khanduri said that he was yet to receive the copy of the high court order, issued on June 18. “The needful would be done after receiving a copy of the order in our hands,” he said. He said that the police and district administration would remove the encroachments as soon as possible by deploying adequate police personnel for the task.

The petitioner, Singh, had pointed out that around 40 dhabas had sprung up in the area, which were not just encroaching upon the road, but also throwing garbage into the canal. Besides, taxi drivers and other vehicle owners were using the road to park their vehicles. All this was resulting in traffic jams in the area and causing problems to both the commuters and the area residents.
