MALAPPURAM: Malappuram district collector on Monday banned the functioning of all granite quarries in Ernad, Kondotty and Nilambur Taluks, until June 30. The order was issued in the backdrop of landslides in various parts of these Taluks during heavy rain last week.

On Monday morning, two youths in Padinhare Chathallur region where a major landslide reported last week, had threatened to kill themselves alleging that revenue authorities in the district are failing to stop the functioning of illegal quarries in the region.

The order issued by the collector, who is also the chairman of district disaster management authority says that the ban of quarrying is part of precautionary measures to prevent accidents due to heavy rain such as landslides, landslips and flash floods. “Huge loss of properties had reported in landslides and landslips during heavy rains in Kondotty, Ernad and Nilambur region last week. The state disaster management authority has already decided to take immediate measures to prevent such incidents in hilly regions across the state. The heavy monsoon rain will continue in the coming days. We should be alert against landslides and landslips”, says the order issued by the collector.

The order was issued under section 26(2), 30 (3)(5)(11) and 33 of disaster management act.
