A delegation of Gharelu Kamgar Union (GKU) activists and domestic workers on Monday met the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (Gurugram-I) Sanjeev Kumar regarding the incident of a domestic worker being brutally assaulted by her employer in DLF Phase-V here last week.
Allegations
The delegation apprised Mr. Kumar of the rise in cases of abuse and physically assault on domestic workers by employers in the city. It alleged that in most of the cases, instead of promptly filing FIRs, the police have invariably worked with bias in favour of the accused.
It said that in the present case too, the police did not promptly file the victim’s complaint despite there being enough evidence against the employer. Moreover, the police readily filed a counter-complaint by the employer based on an injury mark on her ankle.
It also objected to the way in which Section 107/151 of the CrPC was invoked to take the victim into preventive custody. It amply shows that the intention was to coerce the victim to withdraw her case, the delegation said.
Mr. Kumar assured that the administration had taken cognisance of the incident and found that it was a genuine case of a domestic worker being brutally assaulted, said a press statement issued by the GKU.
Mr. Kumar also said that the administration would do whatever is necessary to ensure justice to the victim.
The delegation wanted the district administration to ensure that domestic workers are provided safe and humane working conditions.
The domestic workers’ union also submitted a memorandum to the Deputy Commissioner, demanding registration of FIR against the accused, legal action against the accused for filing a fictitious complaint against the victim among others.
