The swelter is on.

The temperature is Albany is expected to rise into the low 90s on Monday - and it will feel likely nearly 100 degrees when the humidity hits you.

But the heat will run into a cold front Monday afternoon and evening that the National Weather Services says could bring powerful thunderstorms with heavy rain into the region.

In the meantime, the temperature is expected to rise by 5 degrees an hour before topping in the low 90s at about 2 p.m. At that point, the storms could start moving in.

The weather services says the heat index - a combination of the temperature and the humidity - will make it feel like 98 degrees before the cold front starts to reduce the temperature.

But even with the clash between the heat and the approaching cold front, forecasters say the humidity could hang around until Wednesday.

A heat advisory is in effect throughout eastern upstate New York, meaning the humidity could cause dangerous heat-related problems, including heat stroke.

The National Weather Service recommends that people working or playing outside take periodic breaks to drink water and other hydrating fluids. Seek shelter in the shade when possible.
