Auckland Council staff are searching for possible poison in a central Auckland park after a dog died.

Auckland Council contractors are scouring Western Park in the central city's Freemans Bay to locate a poison that allegedly killed a dog.

The Ponsonby Business Association posted on its Facebook page asking that dog owners keep their dogs out of the park over the weekend.

"There is rat poison in the park and one dog has already been killed," the post said.

"We're working to locate and remove it."

Ponsonby Business Association spokeswoman Viv Rosenberg said she was devastated that a dog was poisoned at the park.
