New funds created by the Community Foundation of Volusia and Flagler, a division of United Way, will allow donors to give to charitable causes about which they are most enthusiastic.

These "PassionFunds" are intended to make supporting specific organizations easier and are catered to donors’ preferences.

“It’s almost like having your own private foundation, but without the high costs,” Community Foundation board member Preston Root said in a prepared statement.

"As we reflect on our good fortune, many of us are eager to support worthy causes or help the less fortunate. But doing so can be time-consuming, complicated and may not be done with proper structure to maximize the intended benefit to the charitable organization."

PassionFunds afford donors several giving options, and the Community Foundation handles the administrative, compliance and reporting details, according to statement.

Donors can make ongoing contributions to a family fund from which they distribute grants to qualified U.S. charities at any time. Donors also can select a specific charity or area of passion to support, or establish a scholarship fund.

Options exist for nonprofit agencies as well as for those who wish to directly support United Way.
