Excess humidity and heat add stress to air conditioning units

WAUSAU, Wis. (WSAW) -- Excess stress from humid weather was the tipping point for several aging air conditioning units in central Wisconsin over the weekend.

Experts say if the unit is not functioning efficiently, the stress of heat and humidity can cause it to fail.

Eric Steege runs his own heat and cooling company. He said he's been busy with repairs these last few days.

He says his favorite part of the job is seeing everyone's reaction when their air begins working again.

"I like helping people. It's fun. I use to work at an auto shop that actually closed down. So I took a placement test and this is what i scored highest in,” Steege said.

He said heavy rain does not cause your cooling system to stop working. If it fails, it is likely a wiring issue or the batteries are bad in your thermostat.
