AHMEDABAD: It’s the computers’ moment in the Sun – at least when it comes to the admissions in Bachelor of Engineering (BE) course in Gujarat. As the admission rush has started for the 63,497 engineering seats in the state, the Admission Committee for Professional Courses (ACPC) has got 39,668 forms so far.
According to ACPC officials, the majority of the queries faced by the colleges is related to the seat availability and last year’s cut-off marks of either Computer or IT disciplines.
G P Vadodariya, member secretary, ACPC, said that right from students getting above 90% to those getting 45%, all wish to get admission in Computer/IT courses.
“Over the years, the number of seats offered for both the courses has increased. Some of the factors include better placement and job opportunities,” he said.
Experts said that along with Civil, Mechanical and Electronics & Communication, Computer has become one of the core disciplines for undergraduate engineering courses.
“Every branch has a phase – lasting for about five years. Once Mechanical and Civil were also on the top. However, due to various reasons, Computer and later IT has maintained its position for past two decades. I remember that in early 2000s – when groups A and B were not formed – the merit for computer had even topped that of medical admission,” said Prof M N Patel, former vice-chancellor of
Gujarat University. Patel said that there is no harm in following the trend but one also has to be ready for the pitfalls.
“The decision should be on the basis of interest and long-term goal. If computer is in demand today, it doesn’t mean that when the student would be out in four years, the scenario would remain the same,” he said. Parin Patel, having rank in 9000s with 70% result in Class XII this year, is one of the aspirants for admission in Computer or IT. “I expected to score well in JEE but after average result, I am looking at the management seats as well because I am passionate about computers and wish to make career in hardware engineering,” he said.
