Brazil continued the trend of tournament favourites underperforming as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Switzerland in their FIFA World Cup 2018 Group E opener in Rostov. Earlier, the first major upset of the tournament took place when Mexico’s frenetic counter-attacking football saw them stun defending champions Germany 1-0 at the Luzhniki Stadium.

The performances of Brazil and Germany saw people in social media rejoicing with joy for the performances of the underdogs. There was fun poked at the performance of the big teams. In the case of Brazil, Neymar, their talismanic player came for some criticism.

In the case of Germany, there was a bit of fun related to the country’s history in Russia. There was one tweet which highlighted Germany’s failure in Russia during the 2nd World War while there was immense outpouring of joy for the Mexican team.

Switzerland can reflect on an excellent start to their campaign, having claimed a point from the most difficult of their group matches and improved their chances of reaching the knockout stages for the second consecutive tournament. Mexico’s win will now further boost hopes of getting past the last-16, which has proved to be their bogey round in the last six World Cups.
