Cape Town - Cape Town City coach Benni McCarthy has claimed that if the standard of refereeing in the Absa Premiership improved, then more goals would be scored.

McCarthy was twice called in front of the Premier Soccer League Disciplinary Committee in 2017/18 after criticising match officials.

Pitso Mosimane, Gavin Hunt and Roger de Sa were also vocal in their criticism of the league's officiating, while only 490 goals were scored in 240 Absa Premiership games - a record low for a 30-game season.

"Hopefully next season when we come back, the league seriously, seriously does something about refereeing," said McCarthy, according to KickOff website.

"Because I think, you know what, our league is improving. It is much better, and the teams are getting better. But the officials, I'm afraid are ... we don't have much hope there, you know."

McCarthy claimed that not all PSL referees were to blame for the standard of officiating in the league, but said he was tired of fighting with referees.

"If we have better officials we would've seen more goals and that is a problem," he continued. "That is why there's not so many goals scored in this league, but anyway ... that is a problem for another day."

McCarthy led City to fifth place in the Premiership in his first season in charge. Apart from Platinum Stars and Ajax Cape Town, they had the worst record in front of goal, with netting just 26 times.
