Police were called to an assault with a piece of firewood.

Police and ambulance were called after a man was allegedly assaulted with a piece of firewood in New Plymouth on Sunday night.

A police spokeswoman said officers attended to a report of assault at an address in the suburb of Frankleigh Park about 8pm.

The person called police saying they had been hit by a piece of firewood, she said.

A St John ambulance spokesperson said a patient with minor injuries was transferred to Taranaki Base Hospital.

Police are continuing to carry out enquiries.
