DeKALB – A DeKalb man who was ejected from his SUV in a crash over the weekend has died, according to the Winnebago County Coroner’s Office.

The DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office was told by someone in the Winnebago office that Dominique L. Coleman, 30, of the 400 block of First Street in DeKalb, died from the injuries he suffered during the Saturday crash, according to a news release.

Coleman was driving a maroon Cadillac Escalade south on First Street, north of Coltonville Road, when he attempted to pass two vehicles in front of him, police had said. Coleman’s SUV collided with a silver Toyota RAV4 driven by a 40-year-old woman from Morrow, Georgia, and the Escalade went off of the road and rolled multiple times and ejected Coleman, who was not wearing a seat belt.

Coleman was initially sent to Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital before being flown to OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford, where staff said Sunday he was in critical condition. The 40-year-old suffered minor injuries and was not sent to the hospital, police said.

Winnebago County Coroner Bill Hintz confirmed Monday afternoon that Coleman died at 12:50 p.m. Sunday, and that an autopsy will not be performed, as recommended by the surgeon who operated on him.

Coleman was issued a citation for improper passing.
