Goa Revolution Day is being celebrated today to pay tributes to the martyrs of the state’s liberation struggle.
On this day in 1946, freedom fighter Dr Ram Manohar Lohia gave a clarion call to the people of the state to unite and fight against the Portuguese colonial regime.
The revolutionary call provided a spark to Goa’s freedom struggle and the state was finally liberated on 19th December, 1961.
On the occasion, Goa governor Dr Mridula Sinha and Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar paid tributes at the Martyrs’ Memorial at Azad Maidan in Panaji in the morning.
Addressing the gathering, Mr Parrikar urged people to change their habits to complement the state government’s efforts to make a plastic-free state.
He called for a knowledge revolution to achieve various development targets. Speaking on the occasion, Dr Sinha said, the tales of sacrifices made by freedom fighters to achieve a free and developed Goa must be told to the young generation.
She said, the state is progressing ahead with cleanliness programmes and schemes for the elderly and women, which is a fitting tribute to Dr Lohia and martyrs of Goa’s liberation struggle.
Various functions are being held across the state to mark the day.
