PUNE: Three men beat up and robbed a 37-year-old bank manager of his cash, cellphone and credit/debit cards totally worth Rs3,500 near Mahatma society in Kothrud in the early hours of Saturday when the man was returning home.

The manager sustained minor head injuries in the attack and lodged a complaint with the Kothrud police. An offence has been registered under IPC sections 394 (voluntarily causing hurt in committing robbery, 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint) and 506 (criminal intimidation) by the police.

Sub-inspector Digambar Jakhade said the complainant works in a Mumbai branch of a public sector bank. He reached Pune in a cab on Saturday around 12.45am. “The man got down along the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass near Chandni chowk and started walking home,” Jakhade said.

The road between the bypass and Mahatma Society is secluded and has hardly any traffic during the night. While the complainant was walking down that road, three men blocked his way and started threatening him. They demanded his cash and cellphone.

“When the man tried to resist them, the trio started hitting him. They even hit him on his head with some stones,” said an officer from the Kothrud police.

The officer said the trio then snatched the manager’s cellphone, cash, debit and credit cards collectively worth Rs3,500 and fled. “The manager went home after the incident and later lodged a complaint with us,” the officer said.

After the manager registered a complaint, senior inspector of Kothrud police Appasaheb Shevale visited the spot along with other officials.

Jakhade said the police have launched a search for the trio. “We have started laying traps in and around the Mahatma society. “We have also taken precautions to avoid such types of incidents at that particular point in the future,” Jakhade said.
