Panchkula civic body plans advanced traffic management system,to tie up with Google

The Panchkula municipal corporation (MC) is planning to roll out an advanced traffic management system that will include intelligent traffic management equipment such as traffic sensors, high resolution cameras with sensor-based real time traffic volume count technology, message mikes at every light point, among others.

MC commissioner Rajesh Jogpal said they are considering a few concepts and the main aim is to make the city safe. “We have finalised a few designs with concepts that are running in Delhi and Mumbai. We are planning to hold a meeting soon with the police department regarding the project after which the final call will be taken. To make city safe is our endeavour,” added Jogpal.

The concept includes speed breakers on roads connecting with the main ones, central command through intelligence traffic management system for smooth flow of traffic and swift movement for emergency vehicles.

The commissioner said they will tie up with Google and the sensors will count the volume based on image pattern analysis. “The concept also includes public address system at every signal. Through the cameras, the department concerned will see the traffic and can communicate at signals using mike facility,” he said.

The concept, which is yet to be finalised, will also have specifications such as camera live feeds, sensors and even Google Maps to make a predictive algorithm.

The civic body is also working on beautificationproject that is aimed atsprucing up the entry points and roundabouts of the town. In March, the civic body handed over the project to a private firm to design the concept.

Officials said the concept for new roundabouts were finalised after a meeting with the road safety and sustainable transport consultants of the civic body. “The designs for roundabouts were made with a view to ease traffic flow and minimise road accidents,” said Jogpal.
