Police in Telangana’s Nizamabad district on Monday arrested a block-level elected representative belonging to the ruling Telangana Rashtra Samithi for allegedly kicking a woman on her chest over a land dispute on Sunday.

A video of Dharpalli mandal parishad (block) president Immadi Gopi kicking A Rajavva of Gouraram village of Indalwai block went viral on social media, after an onlooker captured the incident on his mobile and forwarded the clip to his friends and local media.

Police said Rajavva and her family had a dispute with Gopi over a piece of land they had purchased from him 10 months ago. The family said Gopi had sold 1,125 square yards of land and a guest house for Rs 33.72 lakh at Survey No 1107 on the Hyderabad-Nagpur National Highway No 44.

However, Gopi did not transfer the land to Rajavva despite repeated reminders. Last week, she approached Gopi and insisted that the land is transferred to her as per the registration.

But Gopi allegedly demanded another Rs 60 lakh, saying that the market value of the land had gone up. The two parties entered into a confrontation and Rajavva approached the Indalwai police station to lodge a complaint.

On Sunday morning, the family went to Gopi’s house to again demand that the land was handed over to them and staged a protest. Gopi came out of his house and allegedly abused the family.

Rajavva, who lost her patience, picked up her footwear and slapped Gopi. An agitated Gopi then kicked her on her chest and she fell down. Her family members also pushed the block president.

“We are registering a case against Gopi for assaulting a woman and arrested him,” Indalwai police station house officer said.

The Congress party called for a shutdown in Indalwai to protest the high-handed behaviour of the TRS leader.
