Minister says it will be constructed in Madurai, Kanniyakumari and Thoothukudi too

A multi-purpose indoor stadium would be constructed in Madurai, Kanniyakumari, Thanjavur and Thoothukudi districts, said Minister for Forests C. Srinivasan.

Presiding over the inauguration of the State-level badminton tournament held here on Sunday, he said that ₹191 crore had been allocated for sports development and its related activities this fiscal.

The new multi-purpose indoor stadium, constructed at a cost ₹4.23 crore was the second biggest next only to Jawaharlal Nehru Indoor stadium, Chennai, under the control of the SDAT.

The indoor stadium could house nine badminton courts, two volleyball courts, one handball and basket ball courts and four kabaddi courts, besides facilities for conducting table tennis and taekwondo.

Besides, it has all amenities such as officeroom, meeting hall, dormitory for players and adequate toilet facilities.

Inaugurating the tournament at the indoor stadium, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development P. Balakrishna Reddy said that the State government had allocated ₹25 crore for conducting sports event at 12,524 village panchayats to motivate rural sports persons and identify young talents.

Special training

Special training would be imparted to highly talented sports persons under Champion Development scheme. Each sports person would get an aid of ₹25 lakh. Construction of for physical fitness centre would be set up in 17 districts.

The Dindigul district sports complex would be renovated at a cost of ₹80 lakh and district swimming pool at an estimated cost of ₹26 lakh.
