MUMBAI: A 51-year-old garment merchant from Malad (W) ended his life by jumping in front of a train entering the platform at Borivli railway station.
A CCTV camera footage of the June 12 incident which is now doing the rounds on WhatsApp groups, shows the trader getting down from the foot over-bridge and standing near the edge of platform No. 3 around 8.15 am. He has been caught on camera walking along a train as enters the platform and jumping in front of it. Borivli police identified him and traced his family within a few hours of the incident.

"I received a call from police around 10.15am. I got suspicious when I received the call from his mobile and the cops asked me to come to the hospital immediately," said his wife.

With no suicide note being found, his family is clueless why he took the extreme step. Just two days earlier, he had paid deposit for a shop in Malad (West) to start a new business. His wife said: "We are well-off and there is no debt. There was no burden of starting a new business either. He had taken a break for a few months after the government introduced GST last year. Then, in the last 5-6 months, he started working before he decided to restart the same business."

On the day of the incident, the trader left home saying he was going to his shop and then would look for machines need to buy for making ready-made clothes. "My brother paid the deposit for the shop on June 10. The next day he visited many shops and collected samples to find out the latest trend. He was joyful and was never seen depressed. We have been in the business for quite long and we have the experience of handling any pressure," said his brother.

"It is unclear what triggered him to end his life. We are probing the case and an accidental death has been registered," said Borivli railway police senior inspector Sanjay Patil.
