Residents evacuated in Camperdown as factory catches fire
Residents have been warned to keep clear of a fire in Sydney’s inner west because the smoke may contain asbestos.
The blaze started at a factory on Australia Street in Camperdown about 9.30am on Saturday morning.
Multiple fire trucks and 25 firefighters responded, with residents watching as flames could be seen coming from the roof.
Police said residents from neighbouring properties were evacuated as a precaution.
Local roads including Salisbury Road have been blocked off by police.
Officers at the scene, wearing face masks, directed pedestrians to take detours around the scene to avoid the “asbestos fire”.
Australia Street has been cordoned off with yellow fire brigade tape near the intersection of Fowler Street with a Hazmat crew responding to the scene.
Residents walking their dogs and stopping for coffee at a nearby cafe wrapped jackets and scarves around their faces to block out the smoky haze filling the air.
Fire trucks under lights and sirens continued to arrive at the scene more than an hour after the blaze began, parking in a line adjacent to Camperdown Park.
