Sydney man arrested and charged with terror offences

A 26-year-old man from Sydney has been arrested and charged with terrorism offences after he allegedly tried to travel overseas to meet with people who support extremist ideology.

The man, an Australian citizen from Ingleburn, was arrested on Saturday after an investigation by the NSW Joint Counter Terrorism Team.

He will face Parramatta Bail Court today.

Police allege the man tried to travel to Bangladesh in February 2016 but was stopped by Border Force officers who examined his luggage.

They allegedly found "items that indicated his support for extremist ideology", including clothing and material on electronic devices.

An investigation was launched, which allegedly uncovered the man's plans to travel to Bangladesh "to meet with people who held similar beliefs and to possibly engage in terrorist acts outside of Australia".

The man has been charged with making preparations for incursions into foreign countries for the purpose of engaging in hostile activities, other acts done in preparation for or planning terrorist acts, and exporting tier 1 goods without requisite approval.

If found guilty, he faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment.

In a statement, Australian Federal Police said there is "no current or impending threat to the community as a result of today’s activities".

Assistant Commissioner Ian McCartney, the agency's national manager of counter terrorism, said the investigation was lengthy and complex.

He said the Joint Counter Terrorism Team - made up of Australian Federal Police, the NSW Police Force, ASIO and the NSW Crime Commission - would continue to investigate.

“The NSW JCTT will continue investigating all individuals who come to our attention and bring them to account for their criminal actions,” Assistant Commissioner McCartney said.

Police said anyone with information should call the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400.
