VIJAYAWADA: Two persons, under the guise of policemen, extorted money from a businessman near Kummaripalem Center in the Bhavanipuram police station limits on Friday. Somachandra Dutt was on his way home to Krishna Lanka on his motorcycle when two men decamped with his bag containing `60,000 from near Kummaripalem Center around 11 pm. This is the second such incident reported in Bhavanipuram police station limit this month.

According to Bhavanipuram Circle Inspector (in-charge) Dasari Kasi Viswanath, the businessman, who runs an iron foundry in Bhavanipuram, was asked to show his vehicle papers near Dr. KL Rao Head Water Works by two persons. Believing it to be a vehicle check, Dutt complied.

However, he was not able to notice the men taking away his bag.“After travelling some distance, Dutt noticed that his bag was missing. He lodged a complaint on Saturday. We are verifying the CCTV footage and will catch them soon,” Viswanath said.

Allegations of Bhavanipuram police compromising on their duty of maintaining law and order to concentrate on ‘settlements’ also surfaced.
