An accord was signed on Sunday (June 17) by the foreign ministers of Greece and Macedonia to rename the former Yugoslav republic as the “Republic of North Macedonia.”

Although a series of discussions that had soured relations between the two countries led to this accord,  the agreement still requires the approval of both parliaments and a referendum in Macedonia.

Since 1991 Greece has been in dispute with Macedonia over the former Yugoslav republic’s name, arguing it could imply territorial claims over the Greek province of Macedonia.

The leaders of the two countries announced the decision on Tuesday but, there is still some way to go before the name change becomes official.  Things have been complicated further as Macedonia’s President Gjorge Ivanov is refusing to sign the agreement. He has the power to veto the deal, but not indefinitely.
