Raymond A. Slyman passed away on Sunday, June 10, 2018, in Rochester Manor at age 88. Born June 5, 1930, in Beaver Falls to the late Anthony and Elizabeth Betters Slyman. Ray grew up in Beaver Falls and was a 1948 graduate of Beaver Falls High School and also played for the Tigers football team. In high school, Ray also met his future wife of 50 years, Alice Dodds Slyman. After high school, Ray attended the University of Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind., and graduated with a degree in Business Marketing. After college, Ray enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served a year in Korea during that country's unpleasant conflict. Ray left the Marine Corps after four years with the rank of Captain. Starting in 1956, Ray workd for the Mutual of New York Life Insurance Company and worked in their offices in Pittsburgh, Davenport, Iowa, Dallas, Texas, and Stamford, Conn. After retiring in 1979 from Mutual of New York, Ray returned home to Beaver Falls in 1981 and opened his own insurance agency there which he ran until 2007. Ray was a past member of the Beaver Falls Kiwanis Club, where he served for a time as that organization's president. Ray was also a past member of the Beaver County Marine Corps Ball Committee. Ray was also a past member of the Beaver County Sports Hall of Fame Committee, where he served for a time as that organization's president. Ray was also a long time member of what was then the Beaver Valley Country Club in Patterson Heights, where he enjoyed playing golf and taking family and friends for dinner. Ray always loved watching football, baseball, basketball and golf on television, and let's not forget about Fox News. Ray was also a published author of two books, Why Managers Fail, which was about the life insurance business, and Too Young to Fight, which was about growing up in Beaver Falls during World War II. Surviving are his three sons, Raymond M. Slyman and his wife Debra, Everett, Mass.; Joseph Slyman and his wife Karen, Lunenberg, Mass., and Mark Slyman, New Brighton; his daughter, Barbara Keaney and her husband Joseph, Westwood, Mass.; two grandsons, Anthony Slyman, Everett, Mass., and Charles Slyman, St. Albans, Vt.; two sisters, Vivian Ginand, Beaver Falls, and Patricia Modany, Ohioville; his brother-in-law, Paul Pete Balik, Patterson Twp., and many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Preceding him in death were his parents, Anthony and Elizabeth Slyman; his wife, Alice Slyman and their youngest son, Jeffrey Slyman; his sister, Lila Slyman Balik; two brothers-in-law, George John Ginand and Joseph Modany, and a very special cousin, John Slyman. The family would like to thank all of the staff at Rochester Manor and a special thanks to his nurse, Patty Freeman, for all of the compassionate care that was given to Raymond during this most difficult time in his life. A private service will be held at a later date.
