Roger Federer made his competitive return at the Stuttgart Open

Roger Federer returns to the limelight this week in Stuttgart having skipped the clay-court season for the second consecutive season.

He last competed in the Miami Open back in March when he was suffered a surprise defeat to Thanasi Kokkinakis.

But the 36-year-old has purposefully spent the past few months preparing himself for the grass-court season ahead of Wimbledon.

Defending Mercedes Cup champion Lucas Pouille is the No 2 seed while Tomas Berdych and Nick Kyrgios also get a first round bye along with Federer.

And the 20-time Grand Slam winner has admitted he will have to be at his best to win his first Stuttgart Open title.

"It’s not always that easy, especially on grass," Federer said.

"The rallies are short, a few points decide them.

“It was like that two years ago against Dominic Thiem and last year I lost against Tommy Haas after having a match point.

“In the last two years I lost against good players, so it also always depends on your opponent.”
