A Swedish man has been charged after the death of Melbourne man Kai Foley in Gothenburg last year, local media has reported.

The man, 25, was arrested in January and has now been charged with murder.

Swedish newspaper GT said the suspect denied the charges.

Mr Foley, 30, was found in the early hours of the morning on December 20 in Odinsplatsen, close to the city’s central train station. He had been stabbed in the abdomen after leaving a party at 4am.

Police came across the victim during their rounds at 4.50am. He was unconcscious and had suffered severe spinal and abdominal injuries. He died soon after being taken to hospital.

West Sweden police spokesperson Peter Adlersson told Fairfax Media last year that Mr Foley had managed to walk several hundred metres before collapsing.

Police believe the assault may have taken place in Drottningtorget, closer to the central station.

Mr Adlersson said the victim's wallet and other personal belongings were found on him.

GT reported that prosecutor Niklas Hogden said another person provided information about the incident but did not see it.

Mr Foley, who had studied nursing in Melbourne, moved to Sweden early last year to live with his Swedish girlfriend in the country's second-largest city.
