Gold Coast trams suspended after car wedged on tracks

Gold Coast trams have been suspended after a car was driven onto the tracks before becoming wedged on a bridge, blocking the light rail network.

Police were called at about 6.15am after the male driver, aged in his 60s, began driving on the tracks near the G-Link depot at Southport before becoming wedged on a bridge over Smith Street.

A Translink spokesman said passengers were being ferried between Queen Street and the Gold Coast University Hospital by bus and staff were on site keeping customers updated.

The spokesman said tow trucks were still working to clear the car at about 9am and inspectors would need to examine the tracks once the car had been moved before services could resume.
