School Board spends $700,000 on furniture

The USD 490 Board of Education approved the purchase of $679,680 on new furniture at its meeting Monday night.

The furniture is for the two new schools opening in the fall and the soon to be finished Perfroming Arts Center and Extend Building.

There is $700.000 budgeted in to the bond to furnish the upgraded facilities. The furniture was purchased through collaborative vendors. One of those vendors is Laforge Office Supply at 605 N. Main St. in El Dorado.

The furniture is designed by Scott Rice out of Wichita.

Skelly Elementary and El Dorado High are also being worked on over the summer time.

The library at Skelly is being reconfigured and some work will be done to the Science, Technology, Engineering and Math lab.

El Dorado High School is getting new carpet. Carpet from the Performing Arts Center to the Gym as just been replaced.

There are also improvements being made to the junior varsity baseball field dugouts.

Everything that belongs to the school district is now out of Jefferson Elementary and almost out of Lincoln and Grandview.

The auction for items from the schools will be closed June 19.

The 4x800 meter relay team of senior of Cale Carson, Dylan Wittum, Christian Price and Ezekiel Kemboi that set a new school record and won 4A DI state with a time of 7:59.55 was recognized by the board.

Also placing at the state track meet were: 4x400m — Myles Walker, Quiston Wade, Ezekiel Kemboi, Cale Carson, 1st, 3:28.14; and 800m — Cale Carson, 1st, 1:56.18, Ezekiel Kemboi, 8th, 1:59.85.

Also recognised were students in the National Catholic Forensics League from El Dorado High School.

David Staats and Ben Barker placed in the top third for DUO interpretation. Others competing were: David Williams, Oral Interpretation of Literature

Isabelle Haahr, Extemporaneous Speaking; Hudson Vaught, Dramatic Performance; Breckin Olson, Oratorical Declamation; Ashton Gingerich, Student Congress and Melisa Wingfield and Roger Briggs were sponsors.

USD 490 was also recognized with a Gold Level Breastfeeding Employee Support Award from the Kansas Breastfeeding Coalition and its Business Case for Breastfeeding program.

Tonya Mourn, USD 490 bus driver, was recognized for placing third in the third place rookie transit in the Kansas State Pupil Transport Association competition.

In other business the school board:

-approved year end budget transfers.

-approved language edits to the 2019 handbooks.

-were given updates on how to execute board self-evaluations.

-started discussion on policy updates.
