BENGALURU: In a major development which could again lead to a huge reshuffle in state bureaucracy, President Ram Nath Kovind has given his assent to the ‘Karnataka Extension of Consequential Seniority to Government Servants Promoted on the Basis of Reservation (to the post in the civil services of the state) Bill, 2017, known as the SC/ST Promotion Bill.

The Presidential assent has come just a weeks after the state government demoted thousands of SC and ST officials and promoted employees/officers of general and Backward Classes complying with a Supreme Court order which had quashed reservations in promotions.

Deputy CM G Parameshwara and Social Welfare minister Priyank Kharge welcomed the development. “It is a victory for the commitment of the Congress party and the previous Congress government towards welfare of the SC/ST communities,” Parameshwara said, recalling that it was the previous Siddaramaiah government which had passed the Bill to circumvent the SC order.
