As many as 57 houses were completely damaged in the monsoon downpour in Kozhikode district. Among the four taluks in the district, Thamarassery had the highest number of fully destroyed houses.
Revenue Department officials said nearly 1,000 houses had been partially damaged in various villages under Thamarassery, Kozhikode, Vadakara and Koyilandy taluks. Crops in nearly 450 hectares perished in the downpour, they added.
Speaking at a review meeting here on Saturday, District Collector U.V. Jose asked Revenue Department officials to submit a detailed loss estimate covering all taluks on Monday. A Deputy Collector has been entrusted with the preparation of loss estimate and submission of rehabilitation proposal to the government.
Minister for Excise and Labour T.P. Ramakrishnan, who attended the review meeting, said priority would be given to houses that were destroyed in the recent rain. The report on rain-related calamities will be discussed at the next Cabinet meeting for fixing reasonable compensation, he added.
In the wake of the strengthening monsoon and repeated incidents of landslips, all village offices in the district will function on Sundays too. Teams from the Public Works Department have been asked to take up emergency repair work on all damaged stretches in the district.
