Move follows a spate of robberies and instances of speeding

Continuing their crackdown on bike racing on city roads, the police are planning to conduct checks and take action against mechanics who modify bikes for racing.

The police stepped up the crackdown across the city after a series of robberies and an instance of youngsters indulging in bike racing near Chief Minister Edapaddi. K. Palaniswami’s residence on Greenways Road.

Over the past few days, the police have registered over 400 cases of rash driving. “We have intensified checks on arterial roads. We have doubled the number of barricades to slow down speeding vehicles,” said a senior traffic police officer. “Beside, till June this year, we have registered cases against 173 persons who allowed juveniles to ride their bikes,” he added.

The police have also registered over 550 drunk driving cases in the past few days. The city traffic police now plan to raid mechanics. “We will have to take statements from the bikers who have been caught. Based on that we will raid the mechanics who helped modify their bikes,” said a police officer.

Illegal to modify bikes

Officials from the RTO said that it is illegal to modify a bike without permission.

The traffic police have commissioned a short film to be screened in schools. They will be coordinating with the School Education Department for the same.

Creating awareness

“It is to create awareness about traffic rules and the dangers of bike racing. We are also planning to rope in an actor, who is also a racer, to create awareness about the dangers of illegal racing,” an officer said.
