CHENNAI: Police have arrested five people, including three of a family, for murdering a 22-year-old man. The gang hacked R Arvind, a local goon, in front of his house at 9.30pm on Thursday.

Arvind was arrested for attacking his rival, Akash, in February and was jailed, but came out on bail on March 1.

Police said Akash, his father M Jeeva, mother J Manjula and two friends - M Prasanth and K Vicky -- murdered Arvind to avenge the attack. All five, who hail from Korattur, were slapped with murder charges. They were produced before a court in the city that sent them to judicial custody.

Police said Akash and his friend monitored Arvind's movements after he came out of jail. On Thursday, they cornered him on Gangaiamman Koil Street and hacked him to death.

Members of Arvind's family, who ran out to rescue him, found him lying in a pool of blood. The gang had fled by then. Neighbours alerted police about the murder and a team from Korattur police station sent the body to the Kilpauk Medical College hospital for autopsy.

Preliminary inquiries revealed that Arvind and his brothers Kuduyarasu and Anbanraj attacked Akash following a verbal duel. Based on Akash's complaint, the police had arrested Arvind and his two brothers.
