SportsPulse: Americans get a lot of flak for calling the beautiful game ‘soccer’ and not ‘football,’ but it turns out we can lay the blame on the English. USA TODAY Sports
This collection of the most memorable kits in World Cup history is a mixed bag of uniforms appropriate for the respective era and others that might have never been appropriate.
Of course, we're using the term "memorable" very loosely here. Memorable as in interesting and unique, and with wild color schemes that were seared into our brains. So what you won't see here are the classics, Argentina's vertical stripes, Brazil's yellow tops, USMNT's bomb pops (just kidding!).
12. 2010 Slovenia
Good grief, the Charlie Brown kits. Clearly, Slovenia gave little consideration to ol' Chuck's struggles with kicking a football.
11. Jorge Campos
The famous Mexican goalkeeper wore kits that matched his colorful personality.
10. 1994 Nigeria
When Nigeria played in its first World Cup in 1994, it did so in style. Fans have been been abuzz over Nigeria's kits for this World Cup, which are a reimagining of those classic 1994 kits.
9. 1998 South Africa
Like Nigeria before it, Bafana Bafana wanted to make sure the entire planet noticed its first World Cup appearance.
8. 1998 Colombia
Really, this is just an excuse to get Carlos Valderrama and his wild hair involved.
7. 1998 France
When France won the World Cup on its home soil, it did so in kits that were élégante.
6. Cameroon, any year
So ... many ... bright ... colors!
5. 1998 Croatia
Powered by their classic checkerboard kits, Croatia advanced all the way to the semifinal, where it was defeated by France in one of the great World Cup kit matchups in human history.
4. 1994 Spain
These were so "memorable" that Spain decided to do a throwback/tribute version for this year's World Cup.
3. 1994 Germany
What's old is new again for Germany, which also will be sporting homages to kits of bygone World Cups.
2. 1998 Mexico
Mexico made quite a statement with shirts with the Aztec calendar printed into the fabric.
1. 1994 U.S.
It's only been downhill from here for the USMNT kits. With North America hosting the 2026 World Cup, the USMNT could bring these bad boys back.
