Lydia Ko has climbed to third at the LPGA Classic in Michigan.

Lydia Ko now trails the leaders by just two shots after an improved second day on the latest stop of the LPGA tour in Grand Rapids, Michigan on Friday (Saturday NZ time).

Ko started with five birdies from the opening 11 holes to card a five-under 67 from her second round and move into contention at the LPGA Classic as she shares third place on the leaderboard.

The Kiwi golfer then recorded par scores for the last seven holes as Sweden's Anna Nordqvist, Australia's Su Oh and Japan's Sakura Yokomine shared the lead on 10-under at the Blythefield Country Club.

After carding a three-under 69 from day one, Ko has clawed back three shots on the clubhouse leaders ahead of her third round after not dropping a shot on day two.

The 21-year-old is among a large field of those sharing second or third just one or two shots behind the leading pack, the trio of Nordqvist, Oh and Yokomine, who replaced Kelly Shon of the United States and South Korea's So Yeon Ryu, who shared the lead after the first round.
