A 55-year-old woman died and another woman was injured in a fire that broke out at a residential building in Borivli (West) on Saturday.

The incident took place at Dharmkshetra building on Shimpoli Road. Fire engines and ambulance rushed to the spot after they received a call around 5.15pm. The fire was doused within minutes by 5.30pm.

Both victims were rushed to the nearby Shatabdi Hospital. Jaya Gharasiya was declared brought dead and doctors said they suspect the cause of the death to be suffocation. Laxmi Yarola, 35, the other victim, is being treated and her condition is stable.

A senior fire official said, “It was a minor fire caused by short-circuit in the electric wing of the building. However, a lot of smoke emanating from the electric wing is the suspected cause of Gharasiya’s death.”

Recently, a major fire broke out on the 32nd floor of Beaumonde Towers in Prabhadevi on Wednesday. While no one was injured in the fire, the fire brigade faced difficulties dousing the fire due to structural constraints of the building.
